"The Mystery of Marie Rogêt" entspricht nur partiell dem Typus der klassischen Detektivgeschichte, repräsentiert aber gleichwohl ein Paradig¬ma analytischen Erzählens, wobei signifikante Unterschiede gegenüber den beiden anderen Dupin-Geschichten evident sind. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, die Elemente analytischen Erzählens gemäß Webers Theorie in dieser Geschichte zu eruieren und ihre Funktion zu bestimmen. Ergänzend werden die Taxonomien von Alewyn und Neuhaus herangezogen, um der Spezifik der detective story als eines möglichen Falls analytischen Erzählens gerecht zu werden. Dabei wird sich zeigen, dass der facettenreiche Begriff "analytisch" bei Poe insofern eine über Webers Definition hinausgehende Bedeutung besitzt, als er nicht nur die Erzähltechnik, sondern auch die von Dupin eingesetzte de¬tektivische Methode bezeichnet und neben einer psychologischen auch eine semiotische Dimension aufweist.
Nicht nur unter dem letzten Aspekt wird scharf zwischen Dupin als fiktiver Figur, dem Erzähler als Figur und als Vermittlungsinstanz und schließlich Poe als Autor nicht bloß der Geschichte, sondern des kriminologischen Rätsels und seiner Lösung zu differenzieren sein:"Der Gefahr der Verwechslung von Poe und Dupin haben viele Kritiker nicht widerstanden." Hinzu kommt, dass in diesem Text - anders als in der ersten und der dritten Dupin-Geschichte - ein authentischer Mordfall fiktionalisiert wird; aufschlussreich ist dabei, welche Distanz Poe zum historisch dokumentierten Mord gewinnt, insbesondere indem er mehr die analytisches Talent exemplifizierende theoretisch-modell¬hafte Auflösung als die konkrete Ergreifung des Täters und die Erhellung seiner Motive akzentuiert. Das manifestiert sich im Handlungsverlauf, in Poes Umarbeitung des Textes, in Erzählerkommentaren zu Beginn und am Schluss und vor allem im Dénouement.
